MoDOT to seal roads this week Missouri Department of Transportation crews will be sealing on Highways CC, F and Y in Montgomery and Warren counties. Traffic will be reduced to one lane between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. while crews work on the roads. Weather permitting, crews will work in Montgomery County on Highways CC and Y today and Thursday, and in Warren County on Highways CC and F on Monday and Tuesday. Sealing is a preventive maintenance measure that helps preserve the current condition of the road, but doesn't contribute to the smoothness of the surface. The project consists of placing a thin overlay of cinders or chips and oil on the roadway to seal and protect the pavement, and extend the pavement life. The roadway can be driven on soon after applied. However, motorists are encouraged to drive slowly on the newly sealed road or to use an alternate route to avoid delays. Law prohibits trucks from using left lane A new law goes into effect today banning trucks registered for a gross weight of 48,000 pounds or more from using the far left lane when traveling on interstate highways, freeways or expressways in urban areas that have three or more lanes traveling in the same direction. This restriction only applies to certain roadways in the St. Louis and Kansas City metropolitan areas. This restriction will not apply when traffic is directed to use a lane other than the right lane or if the right lane is closed to traffic while under construction or repair. There also will be exceptions when a truck needs to make a left-hand exit. MoDOT is producing signs to mark restricted areas and will begin installing them by mid-September. MoDOT's Motor Carrier Services Division has already taken steps to inform the state's trucking industry. MoDOT also will use its electronic message boards to notify drivers in the affected areas. Bellamy Brothers to play for flood relief The floodwaters have receded in eastern Lincoln County after the midsummer flood. But for many homeowners in Winfield life is still not (and may never be) back to normal. "We are still dealing with the aftermath of the floods," said Bill Byram, chief of the Winfield-Foley Fire Protection District. "There are lots of people still out of their homes and there are a lot of things needed to be done to help them." That help is coming in the way of a flood relief concert to benefit the residents of eastern Lincoln County. People from as far away as St. Louis are expected to attend. Kaspar Broadcasting of Missouri, which consists of KWRE-AM, KFAV-FM and westplextoday.com, is hosting Flood Relief '08, an afternoon and evening full of entertainment Sunday at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds in Troy, highlighted by a performance by the Bellamy Brothers. KFAV/KWRE Radio is in partnership with the Winfield-Foley Firefighters Association, Winfield Athletic Association and Project "Life RAFT" which includes Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service/Crider Center. Proceeds from the concert will go to these organizations providing flood relief services to residents of Winfield and eastern Lincoln County. "We anticipate about three to four thousand people will attend," said Steve Kaspar, general manager of Kaspar Broadcasting, "giving us the opportunity to raise approximately $30,000 or more." Tickets may be purchased at Peoples Bank locations, the Winfield-Foley Fire Department, KFAV studios on Highway 47 in Warrenton, Bank of Lincoln County-Elsberry, Winfield and at all Metrotix locations. Charge by phone at 314-534-1111 or online at metrotix.com. Donations are accepted and appreciated. Bleacher seats are available, or attendees may bring lawn chairs. Other performers scheduled to appear include 2008 Colgate Country Showdown Local Winners Hillbilly Authority, local band The Rough Ryders and up-and-coming country star Hoss Howard with more acts being added in the coming weeks. Festivities will begin at 2 p.m. with the Bellamys set to take the stage at 7. Admission will be a suggested donation of $10 per person with all gate proceeds going to the flood relief effort. Any business interested in becoming a part of this event may contact Kaspar Broadcasting at 636-456-3311 or 636-272-5328. Seat belt reminder from health officials The Warren County Health Department would like to remind residents of the importance of wearing a seat belt. Missouri law requires all drivers and front seat passengers on a street or highway to wear a properly adjusted and fastened safety belt that meets federal National Highway, Transportation and Safety Act requirements. There are approximately 42 percent more fatal crashes in rural settings than urban. Crashes in rural areas tend to be more severe. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths among children ages 14 and under in the United States. Child safety seats and safety belts, when installed and used correctly, can prevent injuries and save lives. Young children restrained in child safety seats have an 80 percent lower risk of fatal injury than those who are unrestrained. For more information, call the Warren County Health Department at 636-456-7474 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Or visit the Web site at www.warrencountyhealth.com.
