Man shot in Warrenton home dies
Police say the man was identified as Thomas Weig. They did not release details about survivors. His wife, Denise Weig, requested that the community leave her and her family to mourn in private, when contacted at her home Monday."My husband and I were very private people, allow us to mourn in private," she said. She declined to comment further about the incident, saying, "I don't want anything good or bad to come out about him. I want to respect the man he is. He is a good man." Authorities arrived at Weig's residence at 2400 Santa Maria Drive about 2:30 p.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting that a man had fallen and injured himself while having a seizure. Upon arrival, paramedics determined the man had received a gunshot wound to the chest and contacted the Warrenton Police Department. Ralph Hellebusch, administrator for the Warren County Ambulance District, said Weig was lying on his stomach in the home's garage when paramedics arrived and that paramedics discovered the gunshot wound on the left side of Weig's chest after rolling him over. Weig was transported to the ambulance district base, where he was pronounced dead at 3:30 p.m., said Warrenton Police Chief Davis Bernard. Bernard said he is waiting on the autopsy report before releasing information relating to how the man was shot. The report will help investigators determine whether the shooting was a homicide, accidental or a suicide, Bernard said. Pam Bechler, a neighbor whose yard adjoins the Weig residence, said she and her fiance would sometimes talk to Denise Weig while the couple worked in their yard. "They're definitely a caring couple," she said, recounting the couple's decision to look after a family of birds that had built a nest in their barbecue pit this summer. |
