Blood drive

BLOOD DRIVE: The American Red Cross will host a blood drive from 2-7 p.m. June 27 at Warrenton Elks Lodge, 1101 E. Old Highway 40 in Warrenton. Donors will receive a VIP Access Pass to the Vans Warped Tour in Kansas City or St. Louis in early July. In addition, each presenting donor will receive a music download card and will be eligible to win an autographed Tony Hawk skateboard.

DIABETES EDUCATION: St. John's Mercy Hospital's Diabetes and Wellness Center is presenting a Diabetes Education Series event, "How to Improve the Quality of Your Life," at 7 p.m. June 5 in Classroom A of the Mercy Medical Building, 851 E. Fifth St. in Washington. This event is free and open to the public. Spouses and family members are welcome to attend. New technology to help diabetics will be the focus of the evening. Representatives of Medtronic/Minimed, Sanofi-Aventis and LifeScan will discuss the latest insulin, glucose meters, insulin pumps, and other technology to help identify and treat persistent difficulties with blood sugar control. They will be available to demonstrate and answer questions from the audience. They will also provide educational materials, in addition to discount coupons from the products presented. CONFIDENTLY HOME ALONE: St. John's Mercy Hospital and Crider Health Center are co-sponsoring the Confidently Home Alone workshop from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. June 7. Children attend from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.; parents attend from noon-2 p.m. The workshop is for children 9 to 13 who care for themselves alone part of the day. Children will learn essential self-care and self-protection skills. Parents and children will learn how to negotiate rules for when children are home alone. Cost is $30 for one child, $40 for two children and $50 for three children from the same family. The workshop will be in Classroom A of the Education Department, on the first floor of the Mercy Medical Building, 851 E. Fifth St. in Washington. Parents are asked to send a sack lunch and drink with their children. Enrollment must be completed by May 28, and is limited to 18 children and their parents. LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION: The Four Rivers Area Family YMCA, 400 Grand Ave. in Washington, Mo., will have a lifeguard certification class beginning June 10. Participants must pass a swimming test before registering for the class. Class is for swimmers ages 16 and up. First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer are included. HEARTSAVER FIRST AID: The St. John's Mercy Hospital Heartsaver First Aid class teaches the skills to effectively assess and maintain life until emergency medical workers arrive. HEARTSAVER CPR: The St. John's Mercy Hospital Heartsaver CPR class teaches adult/infant/child CPR skills and management of an obstructed airway. AUTISM: Autism Education and Support Services hosts classes at the Center for Autism Education, 105 Crossings Industrial Court in O'Fallon. Classes include Understanding Autism, 6-8 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month, and Strategies for Challenging Behaviors, 6-8 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month. Golf event

TOURNAMENT: The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation will host its eighth annual Golf Tournament on June 20 at Innsbrook Resort Golf Course, 1 Aspen Circle in Innsbrook. This is a ladies four-person scramble with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Registration fee is $85 per person or $340 per team. The fee includes 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch and attendance prizes.
